The Socio-cultural developments in 17th-18th c. India divulge the advent of modernism which seems to have been emerging on its own. Several historians have observed it, citing the changing social values in this period.The 17th-18th c. Sculpture also, which otherwise is perceived as a dark phase in the Indian sculptural history, betrays a radical shift in the purpose, technique and aesthetics of Indian sculpture. A conscious departure from the medieval values is seen in the art manifestations of this era. Unfortunately these advancements got ruptured for various reasons. This presentation attempts to trace the progression and termination of these developments.
